ABOUT IKUTOUEN

MESSAGE

Tsuboya Pottery Studio Ikutouen has been creating Tsuboya pottery at Tsuboya, the birthplace of Yachimun, for many generations. Our current sixth-generation master potter and certified traditional art craftsman, Tadashi Takaesu, is a master of creating exquisite items for daily use with his line-carving techniques, as well as Shisa figures, using the mold forged by our fifth-generation master potter Ikuo Takaesu. With the traditional craft and care for materials passed down to us through generations, we will continue to be an ever-present part of our community here in Okinawa.

OUR CRAFT

Materials

Okinawan earth and handmade glaze.

Methods

Dishware are hand thrown using a potter's wheel, and Shisa figures are made using our original mold.

Firing method

Since the 1970s, the climbing kiln is no longer in use at Tsuboya due to smoke hazards.
Today, pieces are fired in kilns powered by gas, kerosene, and occasionally, electricity.

Organization

Our studio is the largest in the prefecture, and we create our pieces as a team, not as indi-viduals.

Purpose

To provide the best "item and price" for everyone - the creators, the store, and the customers.
